I've read that book too. God so sad. But I agree. The red is such a vivid and important color in that novel and in this song as well. As a side note, I love McCarthy's use of archaic words. I love those! Haha Awesome. I just wanted to say that the band does speak about the south east. And back in the day the word "RED NECK" was a slang for workers who wore red scarves around thier neck in protest for miners treatment. Pay attention to the lyrics in the other songs and he does mention the blue ridge mountains Song Meaning Great speculations!

Unfortunately, this beautiful song actually has a rather sad connotation. Here is what I believe the real meaning of the song is. During the French Revolution, mobs of revolutionists beheaded those such as royalty -- I'm sure you've heard of Marie Antoinette who were against the revolution.

Revolutionists would gather around the guillotines in "packs" to watch the beheadings. The fashion then was to wear high-collared coats, which may have appeared to "swallow" the individual. Also, I found a painting depicting a beheading scene in the French Revolution. The revolutionists in the illustration wore red scarves around their necks, perhaps to symbolize their loyalty to the revolution.

Perhaps "Michael" didn't wear a red scarf or did not support the revolution, and thus he was quickly beheaded at the guillotine.

Perhaps this person was for the revolution and was a friend of Michael, or he too was on his way to the guillotine. Hope this helps : ArtifexReel on June 29, Link. ArtifexReel No, not at all. They said the song was quite meaningless. Just some silly lyrics. Cutexyx on October 08, ArtifexReel according to our choir instructor, it has a simpler meaning-- that Michael knocks off the heads of snowmen, and that he falls and bleeds.

Or something similar? Something about snowmen. I can't remember it was two years ago haha peyton on December 09, ArtifexReel Brilliant! So perfectly advanced as to be inarguable!

ArtifexReel That makes so much sense! Hopee on April 14, General Comment pecknold says in an interview with daytrotter that the lyrics to this song are "fairly meaningless", and that the song is more focused on the vocal harmonies instead of the lyrics I'm pretty sure it's about a war, most likely british.

I would encourage people to watch the Pentatonix version video. They have captured the essence of the song musically with their arrangement as is true of most of their recordings and they are always a delight to listen to providing us with lots of ear candy.

This whole thing sounds a lot like a macabre childhood rhyme. I thought the scarves of red had something to do with the white snow red as strawberries. I hope someone can explain this. Name Optional.

I honestly think the pack is like friends and they made snowmen and they put red scarfs on the snowmen and they named one snowman michal idk if I spelled that right and the snowman head fell off and the red scarf made the snow red. This just how I think of it. I definitely agree about the French revolution, but Micheal falling from heaven?

That's just too much. I think the soldier was referring to a fellow comrade. I think it is about the french revolution, when it says "and micheal you would fall and turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime".

Thats like micheal falling and bleeding. So, I've really enjoyed reading all of these. I have myself wondered about the lyrics meaning, but mostly I get more consumed on singing this song with my young daughters, and so I become side tracked.

My oldest daughter 8 asked me yesterday what the song was about. She explained to me what she thinks it's about. Her explanation was a group of people that were together, as in on their own trying to escape something. They were the red scarfs to literally keep their heads on. And they would fall and die. But she couldnt say if the strawberry snow was from the scarf or if it was blood. The one who cried was gone and turned the white as strawberries in the summer time.
